Why I’m Sad & Happy At Blue Jays Loss Yesterday

Although I have been a Blue Jays fan for decades, I was sad and happy when they lost the final game of the 2025 World Series yesterday.

However, before you start rolling your eyes and shaking your head at me, let me explain by sharing correspondence I’ve had with Larry Conran-Smith, my friend who lives in Calgary.

Larry and I have known and worked together for years and share many interests, except for one: He is a diehard LA Dodger fan.

Although he’s a few years older than me, it was easy to drink him under the table.

Here are quotes from our emails about the World Series Baseball playoffs.

The first was Larry’s reaction to what I had written in the “Here Are Some Suggestions For All MLB Fans! story.

I have forever best friends who are fans of the New York Yankees (Peter and Alice Hrehoruk).

October 30th, 9:09 AM: Oh Boy!! You are in big trouble, Cathy is a Blue Jays fan!! I would be sticking up for the Canadian team if I hadn’t been a Dodgers fan since the late 50s.

I have no use for Toronto cause of hockey, probably wouldn’t be a fan if they were the Canadian team in the Stanley Cup.

~ Larry

October 31st, 8:13 AM: Congratulations, Poopsie (Cathy), on your excellent taste, smarts, and patriotic Canadian attitude! Too bad the ‘wish I lived in the USA’ guy you’re married to isn’t such a sore loser. ~ Danny

October 31st, 8:17 AM: I meant to add that I am not a Toronto fan of any sport except baseball. But if they were in the Stanley Cup playoffs and were playing a team from the USA, I would support them. ~ Danny

October 31st, 10:06 AM: Exactly.  One more.  “GO JAYS”.  Love Vladdy

October 31st, 10:11 AM : Thank you, Larry! You made my day. I’m glad you no longer support the LA Dodgers and that you love Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now you can bet against the Dodgers and get rich! ~ Danny

October 31st, 11:07 AM : Oops, that was from me – Poopsie.  Forgot I was on the big guy’s iPad. ~ Poopsie (Cathy)

October 31st, 11:19 AM: Sure, blame Poopsie. At least she is a dedicated Blue Jays fan. ~ Danny

October 31st, 2:14 PM: That message was for Cathy, you should know after all these many years that I am “so very loyal “ I would never jump ship and change team. GO Dodgers GO,

~ Larry

November 1st, 7:04 AM: Friday’s game was great except the Blue Jays lost. Tonight, they’ll win with the stadium filled with Jay’s cheering fans. They will be sending the Dodgers back home to LA, as losers. Go Jays Go! ~ Danny

November 1st, 7:37 AM: Doesn’t even deserve a response!!!! Your favorite Dodger fan. ~ Larry

I didn’t reply to Larry’s last message.

However, I got an email from my friends Peter and Alice Hrehoruk in Ontario.

As mentioned previously, they are lifetime Yankee fans.

Their message was three words long: Go Jays Go!

GAME 7 – 5:00 PMGame Start

Although the game started at 5:00 PM, I had PVR’d it and waited until 6:30 PM to begin watching, since I could fast-forward through the commercials.

The Blue Jays were defeated in overtime.

I watched the entire game, but as soon as the Dodgers scored the winning run, I immediately turned off the TV.

The stress and anxiety of the game and the heartbreaking loss were enough for one day. Besides, it was almost midnight, which is past my usual bedtime.

I didn’t want or need to hear the SportsNet announcers’ comments as they reviewed the game.

I felt sad and fell asleep almost immediately.

Buddy woke me up at 7:00 AM, and I felt happy. He always puts a smile on my face.

Although I am sad by the Toronto Blue Jays’ loss, I am happy for the LA Dodgers and their fans.

I have never watched a baseball playoff season as great as this year’s, not even the Blue Jays’ back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

Many team and individual records were broken during this year’s series, and I am thrilled to have watched such a memorable series.

I am happy that Larry won our friendly battle of wits, and I hope he celebrates by taking Poopsie out for an expensive dinner.

Buy her a dozen red roses and have them delivered with a card signed, “From the Blue Jays.”

Oh, and by the way, LA Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman, whose parents were both Canadian, was one of two Canadian citizens playing in this year’s World Series.

Freddie Freeman, future Hall of Fame of La Dodgers

During one of the first two initial game opening ceremonies in Toronto, the television camera caught a close-up of Freddie’s lips as he quietly sang our National Anthem.

I was so proud of him. He has also played for Team Canada in previous World Championships.

The other player is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He was born in Montreal when his father was playing for the Expos. He considers Canada his second home.

So, that is why I was both sad and happy at the end of the game.

Today, I’m going to move on with life, knowing there will never be another World Series as exciting as this one.

Although my heart aches, I’ll try to keep smiling because there’s been so much sadness in the world this year.

It’s Sunday afternoon, and I think I’ll take Buddy for a walk, then soak in the tub.

Have a great day, and never give up on your dream.

Dedicated to the Blue Jays and Dodgers players.

I hope my stories are a gift to your head and heart.

Hugs,

Danny

Today’s tune from Danny’s library (purchased):

Let It Be – The Beatles

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the broken-hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be

For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

[Instrumental Break]

[Guitar Solo]

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be

I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be, yeah

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

  1. You have way too much time on your hands!! You just made Cathy’s day, she read through everything and is really enjoying a great laugh.
Ps, thanks for making her day. Larry🍸😇🍺

    1. Well, Larry, thanks for letting me know. Now, I’m even happier! Please tell Poopsie that I’m thrilled that she she enjoyed the story. Be sure to take her out tonight for a nice dinner (and don’t make her pay the bill!). Hugs, Danny
